The Great Korean Road Trip – Day 17 – Jeju Geumneung Beach

What makes something “World Class?” If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’d know it isn’t a term I like to throw around. To me, it means it is something you can confidently recommend to someone who is well traveled. The beaches of the Maldives are world class. Angkor is a world class destination. Kyoto is a world class city. Haeundae beach in Busan, meh…not so much.

Jeju Geumneung Beach

In the past, I have praised Jeju’s beaches, especially Hamdeok Beach in the north and near where we were staying. Hamdeok is still great, but let me tell you about this little beach in Jeju called Geumneung. Geumneung Beach is absolutely gorgeous. The sand stretches out almost as far into the ocean as the eye can see. Okay, maybe a kilometer or so. The tides also make wonderful pools of crystal clear water scattered around the area if you prefer to stay off the main beach. The volcanic rocks that line one side and the far away island you can see in the distance only add to the wonderful view. But I havent even told you the best part! Those annoying, huge umbrellas that hog up the best spots of most Korean beaches, hell bent on cramming beach goers like sardines next to each other and preventing anyone else from getting a good spot… limited to a handful on the very back end of the beach. Maybe it has something to do with the geography as you can’t really plant an umbrella in most of it. Who cares what the reason it. The point is, the beach is for the people, and not these greedy and overpriced umbrella companies.

Jeju Island Sunset

If you want a beach that is just crystal clear, goes on for a very long while, and isn’t extremely crowded (no promise on weekend), this is the beach for you.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, we did manage to get another car with another company… so yeah, this IS still a road trip ;).
